I’m extremely excited to introduce a blog series called “Australian designers that inspire me”. Once a month I will catch up with a designer and ask them a series of 7 questions that will help us gain an insight into their influences and what makes them tick!
First up in the series is Mardi Doherty – Director of Doherty Design Studio.
I first met Mardi in 2006 when she designed a desk and shelving unit for my home study. I was, and continue to be, in awe of her talent, her unique designs and attention to detail. Following her journey over the past 14 years, Mardi is undoubtably one of Australia’s most talented interior designers. With more than 20 years’ experience in both residential and commercial interior design, Mardi and her team keep producing projects that will take your breath away! With a unique and playful approach, their projects always display a striking use of colour, a discerning palette of materials and bespoke detailing.

Describe your style in 6 words or less.
Mardi: Considered, layered, playful, elegant
Which architects/designers most inspire you?
Mardi: The work of English designers Campbell- Rey, who work fluently between Interior design, product design and creative direction.
Locally I’m inspired by architects Kennedy Nolan who continue to surprise me with their confident yet quiet architectural moves.
Historically I’m constantly inspired by the work of Christo and Jeanne- Claude, who wrap small objects as well as monumental outdoor projects. Their artwork transcends the traditional bounds of painting, sculpture and architecture.
Who’s a favourite you’re following on Instagram at the moment?
Mardi: I love designgek for some quick bites of design goodness.
What is your go-to white interior paint colour?
Mardi: Dulux Natural White is our usual go-to white, but we’re also enjoying Dulux White Exchange (half strength).
What is your most cherished piece at home? (furniture, art, lighting or decorative)
Mardi: A recent Covid purchase of two 1970’s Salvador Dali glass bottles are my current favourite pieces. They are almost 1m high and are fabulous! One is bright orange and the other is a luscious red in the shape of a woman’s face with lips.
If you could splurge on a piece of furniture or art right now, what would it be?
Mardi: A wall of my home covered in an artwork by Valerie Sparks. Valerie creates mesmerising large scale photo-media landscapes that are incredibly dreamy.
Do you have a trade tip you can share?
Mardi: Allow your ideas to percolate! I like to quickly brainstorm an idea (or many ideas), and then wait for a day or two and allow those ideas to develop/morph or change. It’s amazing what you notice around you when you’re focused on an idea.
