Styling your shelving is a simple and easy way to give your room personality and an eclectic feel while surrounding yourself with your favourite things.
I love going to people’s homes and looking at their shelves and seeing how everything is displayed. Seeing their favourite objects alongside books and other bits and pieces is an expression of their personal style and taste.
Although styling your shelves is not always easy and may need a couple of edits, it’s worth investing the time to get it right!
See below my five tips on how to style your shelving: -
1. Book arrangement – Take into account height. Vary heights and create interest by stacking books horizontally as well as lining them up vertically. You can also arrange book spines by colour or have all book spines facing the back wall to create a monochromic look. Remember to stack your books throughout all of the shelves as opposed to one shelf where it will look too heavy.
2. Decorative objects – Mix and match sculptures, ornaments and knick knacks throughout your shelves. All the objects you have collected over the years should be on display for everyone to see. I love displaying my collection of Vitra miniature chairs as they work so well displayed with books and photos.
3. Add something natural – Add a pot plant, vase of flowers or some other natural objects like shells and bowls of coral. A flowing potted plant is a great way to add a pop of colour and interest.
4. Artwork - Incorporate artwork and framed photos into your display. Artwork doesn’t need to be hung and can be propped up against the back wall or if the size is right on top of a book.
5. Add boxes to fill in space – By adding boxes & baskets to your shelves you not only create interest but also extra storage. Use the same style/colour box along the bottom of a bookshelf to create visual weight or you can use them scattered throughout your shelving.
To add some interest to your shelves, we are currently giving away two Vitra miniature chairs at Collécte.
