Japan sofa

Finn Juhls partnership with Danish furniture manufacturer France and Son suited industrial production yet was true to the 1950s ideal of simple design. The most famous example is the Japan series from 1953. The sublime minimalist simplicity of the sofa was inspired by traditional Japanese building techniques. The solid horizontal backrest, resting on slightly tapered legs, is a reference to a Japanese temple door. The backrest ends in a circular recess, adding an optical refined impression to great effect. Deviation is in the detail and in this simple construction Juhl emphasised the difference between the carried and the carrying elements by separating the backrest from the bearing frame with solid brass brackets. Elegant and sculptural, the Japan sofa is the epitome of Mid 20th century design. A chair is not just an industrial product in a space. It becomes form and space itself. This rare original piece has been in my collection for over 30 years. Its frame is oak and features soft olive green upholstery with two matching cushions.
