Valentine Typewriter

The Valentine is a design icon, featuring in the permanent collections of hundreds of galleries and museums across the world. It's cultural impact was immediate, being displayed in New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) by 1971. Other prominent institutions it resides include the Metropolitan Museum of Art (the Met), London's Design Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A), the Smithsonian, the Triennale di Milano and our own Museum Victoria. Doubling as a fashion accessory, with the likes of Bridgette Bardot, Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn all sporting Valentines. It's advertising campaign posters are sought after collectors items and it has earned immediate entry into any book on the history of mid-century design. One of the world's most written about typewriters, the Valentine represented the counterculture, pop art sensibilities and late 60s sticking it to the man. An intentional ploy, Sottsass stated that the Valentine could be “used any place except in an office, so as not to remind anyone of monotonous working hours, but rather to keep amateur poets company on quiet Sundays in the country”. Beyond all the iconoclast credentials, the Valentine at its heart is a very handy machine. So if you want to add a bit of analogue to your digital world, you may as well go for WOW.
